Chronograph Introduces Semantic Search for General Partners

Chronograph, leading provider of portfolio monitoring, valuations, and analytics technology for institutional private capital limited partners and general partners, today released Semantic Search for its Chronograph GP solution. The AI tool, initially released to Chronograph LP clients in March, enables clients to ask questions across structured and unstructured document data in natural language and receive answers drawn from the source material.

Where traditional keyword search matches the words that are typed, Semantic Search matches meaning. For example, an investor asking which portfolio companies are seeing margin pressure can surface a CFO letter describing input costs outpacing the ability to reprice and a board deck noting gross margin headwinds, though neither document contains the exact “margin pressure” keyword phrase. Years of board materials, operating reviews, and credit agreements become searchable by what they are truly about rather than solely by the explicit vocabulary they happen to use.

“Search that reads meaning is only valuable if the answer can be trusted,” said Divya Odayappan, Product Manager ChronoAI & MCP, Chronograph. “That means referencing the right company’s documents, only the ones that user is entitled to open, and an answer you can take back to the page it came from. We have spent a decade making Chronograph a deterministic system of record, and anything we build on top of it inherits that.”

Semantic Search for Chronograph GP brings:

  • Domain-Trained Intelligence. Semantic Search understands private markets. A search for ‘returns’ for example also surfaces insights about IRR, MOIC, or DPI, connections a keyword search would miss entirely.
  • Cross-Document Scale. Queries run across your entire portfolio simultaneously, without document constraints.
  • Richer Insights. Semantic Search combines structured quantitative data with unstructured commentary and context from documents, delivering insights that no other technology can provide.

Semantic Search is available to general partner clients through the in-platform ChronoAI interface and through Chronograph’s Model Context Protocol (“MCP”) connectors. MCP is the open standard that allows outside AI tools to query Chronograph data directly. Clients can use the Chronograph MCP in Claude, ChatGPT, or Perplexity.
