Burgiss’s Solutions

Burgiss primary offerings are Private i®, its portfolio monitoring solution for private capital LPs and Burgiss® Manager Universe, its private markets benchmarking indices.

Burgiss’s Private i® is a managed data service which collects and organizes limited partners’ private capital performance data in one cloud-based analytics platform. Private capital limited partners can use Private i® to analyze their portfolios, deliver performance reporting, assess risk, and understand value drivers. The Private i® platform lacks some data, including co-investments and certain company-level data. See how Chronograph has enabled a dataset 20x deeper than Burgiss Private i®.

Per MSCI’s Index Catalog as of Q4 2024, Burgiss provides over 200 private capital indices based on 13,233 private capital funds and 1,524 private capital fund of funds. These fund indices are available via and make use of the fund data clients provide to the Private i® platform. Chronograph also provides benchmarking tools to help private capital limited partners analyze their returns with relevant comparisons, but importantly does not make use of its clients’ data to do this how Private i® does.

Burgiss’s Main Competitors and Alternatives

To understand who competes with Burgiss, it’s important to look separately at alternatives to its two key services: portfolio monitoring and benchmarking.

  1. Chronograph: Burgiss’s primary portfolio monitoring competitor is Chronograph for Limited Partners. Chronograph’s differentiators include: total private capital portfolio coverage (including co-investments), total portfolio company metric coverage (not just template-based, fund-level data), click-to-audit functionality from every data point to its source document.
  2. eFront (by BlackRock): eFront’s differentiators include: eFront integration with Aladdin and other BlackRock products, its own benchmarking solution.
  1. Cambridge Associates: Burgiss’s primary private capital benchmarking competitor is Cambridge Associates, which also provides extensive private capital fund indices. For context, Cambridge Associates offers integrations and its benchmarks are available to mutual clients on Chronograph’s portfolio monitoring platform.
  2. Preqin: Preqin also provides private capital benchmarking solutions.
  3. PitchBook: Pitchbook also provides private capital benchmarking solutions.

“Using Chronograph’s reporting capabilities has increased efficiency, accuracy, and consistency in our quarterly reporting to our LPs. Being able to automatically pull in portfolio company data to our quarterly letters and easily manage drafts has drastically improved the review process and collaboration between partners, associates, and the finance team.”

“Having worked with Chronograph and incumbent solutions at prior firms, I’ve seen firsthand how Chronograph drives value for stakeholders. It was critical for us to implement Chronograph as early as possible. The platform has been an integral part of our technology stack since day one and continues to support key data management processes within Knox Lane.”

“Chronograph’s technology has allowed us to capture and structure more than seven million data points from our portfolio, and we feel the LP solution is unique in its ability to capture such a rich and complete data set.”

“Since entering the market, Chronograph has changed the way private equity firms and their investors interact with their data, offering elegant and innovative software designed to enable robust, timely, and transparent reporting and analysis.”

“As secondaries investors, we are investing in hundreds of funds and thousands of companies. This means our data scales up in a very rapid way. We’ve found that unlocking our data and prioritizing its value in our investment cycle has helped us become better investors.”

“We knew we needed to streamline data collection from our portfolio companies to improve operational efficiency. We wanted a tool that allowed for full flexibility in complicated workflow design and delivered a modern user experience. With Chronograph, we can pivot on a dime and collect additional data as needed.”

“Previously, our reports were not stored in the database. Anytime we needed to trace the origin of a specific metric, we had to manually search for the report. The ability to click on any metric in Chronograph and instantly access its location in the corresponding source report has been really powerful.”
